Rose Star

This gorgeous Rulebreaker ring showcases a rarity in gemstones: star rose quartz. Due to a special combination, this type of rose quartz has a 'star' that travels over the surface of the gemstone as the ring moves. This effect is more commonly seen in sapphires, but can occur in some quartzes. The rays of the star are somewhat diffuse in this piece, but the centre glows brilliantly. As is the usual procedure, this gemstone has been cabbed rather than faceted so that the star effect is visible.

The star rose quartz is flanked by two cabochons of prehnite, a lovely greenish gemstone coming primarily from Australia. The third gemstone in this suite is a deep orange carnelian. The ensemble of these variously coloured gemstones produces a beautiful 'bouquet' from the garden.

The band is sterling silver with a patina of black rhodium and 22-karat yellow gold highlights around the gemstones. The band is textured and intertwined to resemble branches. It is very comfortable and provides great stability to the ring.

Carnelian: One 4-mm cabochon round. Deep orange, good clarity. One of the birthstones for July.
